My year as an interior design intern

As a university student there is always that daunting feeling of what the future might hold. Completing a year long internship has been the perfect way to ensure me that I have chosen the right career path for me. Along with helping me to gain a skill set that is vital for the rest of my time and university and my future career.

My time at Tibbatts Abel has been a very eye opening introduction to the design world. I have been able to work on a range of projects within the hospitality, leisure and residential sector, from start to finish and tackle real life problems that you wouldn't come across at university.

Each member of the design team is extremely talented and bring their own individual styles and skill sets to the company. Throughout my placement I have managed to work with each member of the team individuallyallowing me to gain a vast range of skills that will not only benefit me back at university but will also benefit me when I return to industry after completing my degree.

At TA I have been given the opportunity to produce; schemes, visuals, working drawing packages, attend client meetings and site visits. All helping me put the skills I have learnt at university into practice and further developing my skill set; conceptually, visually and technically. My knowledge of materiality and software such as, AutoCAD and Photoshop has improved significantly which will be extremely beneficial back at university. As well this, my organisation and time management skills have been enhanced by being given the opportunity to work on fast-paced projects and working to strict deadlines.

Although experience is key, networking also plays a massively role in securing work in the future and can also open a door to new opportunities. Throughout my year at TA I have taken part in many social activities that has helped me to start building up my network with suppliers, clients and my fellow colleagues.

No two days at Tibbatts Abel is the same, helping me familiarise myself with hospitality, leisure and residential sectors of the design world and ensure me that it's the path I want to take in the future. I couldn't have asked for a better company to complete my placement at. The team is extremely talented, welcoming and energetic. I have made some amazing memories with the team over the last year and can't thank them enough for the invaluable experience they have given to me.
